Build a Claude Project with CLIA/CAP Standards for Instant Regulatory Lookup

1. Log into claude.ai with Pro account
2. Click "Projects" → "+ New Project"

You need to collect and download the source documents before uploading. Here's where to get them:

CLIA Regulations (42 CFR Part 493) — Free

• Source: Electronic Code of Federal Regulations (ecfr.gov)
• Search for "42 CFR Part 493" → download or copy as PDF/text
• This is the primary federal laboratory regulation document

CAP Checklist Summaries — Use what you have

• Your lab should have access to current CAP checklists through CAP e-LAB Solutions
• You can summarize the key checklist requirements into a text document (don't share proprietary documents outside your institution)
• Alternative: use publicly available CAP resources and the CAP website summaries

Your Lab's Internal Policy Documents — Compile a summary

• Create a text document summarizing your lab's key policies
• Include: QC policy, critical value policy, PT policy, competency policy, specimen rejection criteria
• This is not PHI — it's operational policy content

Click "Project Instructions" inside your project and write:

ANSWERING GUIDELINES:
1. Cite specific sections when possible (e.g., "Per 42 CFR 493.1283..." or "Per the uploaded QC policy...")

3. If you need to extrapolate beyond the documents, indicate this clearly
4. Do not include patient information in any response

Type each of these test questions in the project conversation:

What you should see: Answers that reference your uploaded documents, citing specific sections from CLIA or your internal policies.

Calibration: If Claude gives answers without citing your uploaded documents, ask explicitly: "Based on the CLIA document I uploaded, what does it say about [topic]?" This prompts Claude to search the uploaded content rather than relying on training knowledge.

For the 5 most important regulatory requirements you look up regularly, verify Claude's answer against the original document. Claude is generally accurate on CLIA content but may occasionally misstate a specific detail. This one-time verification builds your confidence in the tool.
